Hi, Friends.
After a busy summer of jazz gigs and recording I am delighted to say my new CD, Late Night Parlour, is finished. It was a labour of love and so many people helped out along the way. I’ll have CDs in hand in early December so I invite you to put some on your Christmas list. Order from the site and we will get them in the mail in time for Christmas. This album is fun, sassy, upbeat, danceable…and all round cheerful. Just what we need right now, don’t you think? The CD includes five incredible recipes from The Food Goddess, Chef Rachel Leslie. She will be posting more Late Night Parlour recipes each month throughout the winter…one for each song on recording.
For fans on Prince Edward Island I invite you to join the Late Night Parlour Little Big Band and me at Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre for an evening of dancing on New Year’s Eve. Dust off the tux, polish the heels and bring in the New Year in style. We are going to have a terrific night!
Early in the 2009 I will be hitting the road with Toronto based singer/Celtic guitarist October Browne for our annual ‘Raise the Dead of Winter’ tour. We do a double bill and always have a fantastic time together on the road. We have shows in Toronto, Belleville, Muskoka, Ottawa and Montreal. I will be conducting some Sound Yoga singing workshops as well. Get in touch if you would like us to make a stop in your town. We love to do house concerts.
The official launch for Late Night Parlour is with the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra at the Confederation Centre on Sunday February 15, 2009. I can’t wait to do these tunes with a big orchestra.
I hope you love this album! Stay warm and keep in touch.
Cheers, Teresa.
Late Night Parlour….a tale of two islands
Late Night Parlour celebrates a couple of great American inventions, Airstreams and jazz… jazz that has been spiced up by our tropical neighbours to the south. My music is informed by my countless winter journeys to the Caribbean and Latin America.
Last winter my husband, son and I spent three glorious weeks in the village of Castera on the Island of Tobago: swimming, snorkelling, jamming with the local soca musicians and hanging out. Tobago is one of the most beautiful islands in the world—and living on Prince Edward Island, I know beautiful!
One afternoon, local bass player Junior Simon took us on a tour of the west coast of Tobago. Driving up the side of a mountain near Englishman’s Bay, we spotted a wonderful hand-painted sign that said ‘Welcome to the Late Nite Parlour.’ I loved it and immediately thought it could be the title of my new recording. Checking inside we met Buffalo, the owner of this tiny rum shack, with the fabulous view of Parlatuvier Bay. The Late Nite Parlour sells the basics: beer, rum, rice, beans, green hot sauce and a bit of hardware. Just my kinda place—and not unlike some funky little shop you might find in the Maritimes.
The Late Nite is a favourite hangout for local musicians. I gingerly asked Buffalo if I might use the name. He said sure, just as long as I came up to the Parlour some night and played a gig. No problem. I went back to my beach chair, wrote the title track of this recording and had a marvellous night singing at The Late Nite…just me and the Rastas, Buffalo, his kids and some great local players—an evening I will never forget!
I hope this recording will conjure up visions of steamy tropical nights with light-hearted jazz, laughter, good friends and romance. Try our rum punch to put you in the mood… Check back here every month for great Late Night Parlour recipes compliments of The Food Goddess and my friend Chef Rachel Leslie. Enjoy!
